Freeview iPhone application

Freeview is a subscription-free DTT service in the UK that provides viewers with up to 50 TV channels and 24 radio stations. It is viewed on more than 18 million TV sets, and more than 10 million homes use the service as the main television service.

The business problem

The key objective was to raise awareness of the recently launched HD service from Freeview. The app works as an extension of Freeview's online TV guide; letting users search television listings including the Freeview HD channels when and wherever they are. It can be downloaded from the app store now.

The process

A lengthy and detailed user experience and information architecture piece was carried out to make sure that the presentation of information and user interaction was clear, simple and quick, a design style was then applied which not only integrated the app with the Freeview brand but also enabled the information to be displayed as clearly and precisely as possible. The build was complex, as the app works on a number of feeds which allows the television guide information to be drawn in dynamically, these had to integrated and needed to update automatically as they changed over time. Throughout the process we made sure to stick religiously to Apple’s complex and detailed guidelines to make sure the app was approved first time round. The product

A full functioning portable television guide, with a quick and simple navigation, allowing user to find out what’s on the box with a scroll of a finger. Additional features such as a sophisticated search engine which allowed free text or category search sets it apart from existing TV Guide applications. Recommendations are also provided through the integrated Twitter feed brought to you directly from Freeview HQ. The ability to select your specific region and favourite channels adds another level of personalisation, but the app has been deliberately kept functionally light to enable speed and ease, as content really is king with this application.

The outcome

The iPhone has received over 5000 downloads within the first week since launch and is 2nd in the UK 'Reference' Top Free chart, with an average rating of 4/5. An upgrade which includes a version for the iPad is already underway.
